About Lucid Games

Lucid Games is a video game studio in Liverpool. It makes and co-develops console and mobile games for itself and for other publishers. Its work includes Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, Switchblade, Destruction AllStars on PlayStation 5, and support work on Sea of Thieves. Destruction AllStars was announced by Sony in June 2020 and released on PlayStation 5 in February 2021, and it was built in Unreal Engine 4. Wikipedia says many of its project leads, including director Colin Berry and lead designer Karl Jones, had earlier worked on the Wipeout games. The studio has also been linked to a 2023 announcement that it would take over the Twisted Metal franchise, according to a news headline we saw but did not read.

We did not read a formal mission statement on the company's own site. Its story, as told by Wikipedia, is that the studio was formed on 21 February 2011 by former staff of Bizarre Creations, the Liverpool racing game studio, days after that studio closed. Liverpool Vision, a local economic development company, backed the founding to keep the former Bizarre talent in the area.

The ten founders included Pete Wallace as managing director and Andy Davidson as commercial director, with Brian Woodhouse joining in 2016 as head of business development. The studio is in Liverpool, in a permanent city-centre office it moved into within its first year. In July 2023 it was acquired by Tencent's LightSpeed Studios, and it appears to continue as a Liverpool studio; we did not confirm its current trading name on its own site.

The team grew from eight people to twenty-eight in the first year, passed 100 people by 2019 and had more than 150 in 2021, according to Wikipedia. Its list of publishing and development partners has included Sony Interactive Entertainment, Rockstar Games, Activision, 2K Sports, Channel 4 and Xbox Game Studios, so staff can work on varied projects. Liverpool Vision's support at the start shows the local backing for keeping games talent in the city, and the studio's growth from eight to over 150 people in ten years shows how a small studio can expand.

Liverpool has a long games history, and studios like this keep that skill base going. The studio needs programmers, artists, designers, producers and QA testers as well as business and publishing roles. See Lucid Games' website for current openings.
