A Barnsley-born clothing brand, best known for colourful dungarees, with its head office in Brighton and shops across UK cities.
Lucy & Yak is a British clothing brand that became famous for its dungarees, which it describes as colourful, comfortable and made from organic and recycled fabrics. It later added tops, trousers, dresses and other items, many in joyful prints. It sells online and through its own shops, and its materials include GOTS-certified organic cotton, flax linen and recycled plastic. It reports certifications from Fair Wear, GOTS, GRS and a buy-back scheme called Re:Yak, which gives a voucher for returned worn clothes. It featured on the Sunday Times Hundred list for 2024.
Lucy Greenwood and Chris founded the brand in July 2017. The name comes from Lucy's first name and Yak, the campervan in which they travelled in New Zealand. There they made tobacco pouches from lost clothing, and back in Yorkshire they noticed that dungarees sold better than anything else in the charity shops of Barnsley. They designed their own with a small team of tailors in India, and the first thirty pairs sold within hours. Wikipedia names the other founder as Christopher Renwick and reports that Ms Greenwood resigned as a director in July 2025, so leadership has changed.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire, remains the team's home base, while the head office is in Brighton, where it opened its first shop in 2019. The company's own page lists stores in Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London and Manchester, and Wikipedia adds Norwich, Nottingham, Cambridge, Exeter and Portsmouth. A 2023 figure reported there put the workforce at 180 people, with two offices, a warehouse and five shops.
The brand's mission, in its own words, is to help people wear clothes that make them feel like themselves rather than following trends. It talks about joyful prints, sustainable choices, circularity and building a community of kind, creative people. It says it is independent and employee owned, putting people before profit. Those are the company's claims. Wikipedia also records customer criticism in 2026 about discontinued sizes and a shift to more discounting, so views on the brand are mixed.
A business like this employs designers and print artists, production and ethical-sourcing specialists, buyers, shop managers and shop teams in each city, marketing and social media creators, e-commerce, customer service and warehouse staff. Shop work is a common first step in fashion retail. The brand's website lists open roles.
