The Manchester football club formed in 1878 as Newton Heath, playing at Old Trafford and training at the Carrington training centre, with a men's team, a women's team, an academy and a charitable foundation.
Manchester United is one of the most famous football clubs in the world. Its men's first team plays in the Premier League at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester, and it also has a women's team and an academy. Wikipedia lists its honours as 20 top-flight league titles, 13 FA Cups, six League Cups, three European Cup or Champions League titles and a record 21 FA Community Shields. The club is nicknamed the Red Devils, and the devil motif was inspired by Salford Rugby Club. Red shirts have been the standard home kit since 1902.
The club began in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR, formed by workers at the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. In 1902, after nearly going bankrupt, four local businessmen invested and the club was renamed Manchester United. It moved to Old Trafford in 1910. On 6 February 1958 the aircraft carrying the team crashed in Munich, killing 23 people including eight players, and the club was rebuilt under Matt Busby, who went on to win the 1968 European Cup. Alex Ferguson managed from 1986 to 2013 and won 38 trophies. We did not find a modern mission statement on the pages we read, so we have not invented one.
In the UK, the club is based in Greater Manchester. Its home ground is Old Trafford, and its training base is the Trafford Training Centre near Carrington, less than ten miles away, on a site of 108 acres of which the club uses 85. The first-team building opened in 2000 and the academy facility in 2002. It has 14 pitches, including one indoor, and a nature reserve maintained with the Cheshire Wildlife Trust. In 2023 the club opened a facility designed for the women's first team, and a major upgrade of medical, sports science and academy buildings was reported as opened on 8 August 2025.
The Manchester United Foundation, the club's charity, has worked with the Michael Carrick Foundation since 2018. Carrick's Street Reds offers free football and coaching to young people in the heart of Old Trafford. The Michael Carrick Foundation aims to help disadvantaged young people in Greater Manchester and the North East realise their potential. The pages we read did not state a mission for the Foundation itself or a culture for the club's staff, so we do not claim to describe them.
A club like this employs a very wide range of people. At Carrington there are coaches, analysts, sports scientists, physiotherapists and doctors, groundsmen who look after 12 grass pitches, and academy education staff because young players study alongside training. Around Old Trafford there are matchday operations, security, ticketing and hospitality, retail, media and content teams, community and foundation workers, and finance, legal and human resources staff. If you like data, health, teaching, video or business, there is likely a team that uses it. Check the club's website for what is advertised now.
