About Maritime Transport

Maritime Transport is a UK logistics company that moves shipping containers. Intermodal means using more than one type of transport, such as ship, rail and road, for a single journey, and the company works at the point where containers come off ships. Its services include container transport and storage, freight management, curtainsided distribution (lorries with side curtains for loading pallets), container repair, cargo handling and warehousing. In the East of England its pages describe port-based container services, off-dock storage of loaded and empty containers, rail-linked logistics and onward haulage by road.

Maritime was bought from Hutchison Ports in 2001 and grew into one of the largest privately owned intermodal transport operators in the UK, according to a company newsletter and a careers-information profile. At that time its managing director, John Williams, described the key to success as "managing the part of the supply chain from port to door". The newsletter, which is undated, said it had nine depots, about 475 staff and drivers and around 300 vehicles. We did not find a formal mission statement.

The head office is Maritime House, Clickett Hill Road, Felixstowe, Suffolk, beside the UK's biggest container port. The company says it now has more than 40 depots across the UK. Its East of England page lists sites at Felixstowe (a container depot and transport depot), Ipswich (a distribution centre at Sproughton and the West Bank Terminal), London Gateway and Tilbury in Essex (including the London Rail Freight Terminal), Alconbury and Peterborough in Cambridgeshire (including a depot at the IKEA distribution centre). It is registered at Companies House as Maritime Transport Limited, number 01160595.

The company says it combines scale with a personal approach, and that learning from experienced staff is part of how it works. These are its own statements. The older newsletter highlighted driver facilities, gated 24-hour security and investment in depots, suggesting a company that focuses on the working conditions of its drivers. We did not find independent staff stories.

Container logistics offers a mix of practical and office jobs. Drivers move containers between ports, rail terminals and customers. Depot staff load, unload, store and repair containers, and planners decide which vehicles go where. Customer service and operations teams track containers, deal with delays and talk to shipping lines. Finance, IT, health and safety and human resources teams support them. If you like ports, ships, trucks and trains and want to see world trade at street level, this is a good example of a business that keeps the economy running.
