The London-based specialty insurance arm of Markel Group, serving large businesses through the London Market and small businesses, tradespeople and charities through Markel Direct from offices across the UK.

About Markel International

Markel International is the London-based part of Markel Group, a global specialty insurer. In the UK it covers two very different customers: large and complex risks placed through brokers in the London Market, and small businesses, contractors, freelancers, tradespeople and charities, which it serves directly under the Markel Direct name. Its UK offer includes public liability, professional indemnity, employers' liability, cyber, directors and officers, contract works and trustee cover.

The company points to what it calls the Markel Style, its vision, values and code of behaviour. The Markel Direct page says "Above all, we enjoy what we are doing" and describes a culture of innovating, creating and sharing success, with a people-first approach built on strong relationships with colleagues, brokers and clients. We did not find a single formal mission statement on the pages we read.

Markel's UK pages say it has more than 25 years' experience insuring small and medium-sized businesses and more than 200,000 UK clients. Markel International Insurance Company Limited is authorised by the Prudential Regulation Authority and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. The UK group also includes Markel Law LLP, Markel Tax and Markel Care Practitioners, which add legal, tax defence and care consultancy support alongside the insurance. The ultimate owner is Markel Group Inc., which is listed in the United States.

The company lists six UK offices. London, at 20 Fenchurch Street, is the international headquarters. The others are Birmingham (One Snowhill), Croydon, Leeds (City Square House), Manchester (King Street) and Rugby. Its locations page says teams in these offices support the insurance, tax and law services as well as finance, IT, human resources and marketing. The regional offices are described as serving regional brokers and small businesses.

That mix means the range of jobs is wide. In London there are underwriters and claims specialists for large specialty risks. In the regions there are underwriters and sales teams working with brokers, customer service and claims handlers for small business policies, solicitors and tax advisers in the Markel Law and Tax teams, and the usual finance, technology, people and marketing roles. The Markel Direct page also shows a 4.8 out of 5 customer rating on Feefo, which is a measure of customer service you can ask about at interview.
