Marsh is an insurance broker and risk adviser. Businesses use it to understand the risks they face, to buy insurance and to get help with claims. Marsh describes its work as industry-focused brokerage, consulting and claims advocacy, using data, technology and analytics to help clients lower their total cost of risk. Its UK business includes specialist teams, for example a marine practice that advises ship owners, charterers, cargo owners, ports and shipyards.
Marsh is part of Marsh McLennan, a global professional services group whose other businesses include Guy Carpenter (reinsurance), Mercer (people and benefits consulting) and Oliver Wyman (management consulting). The firm traces its roots to the merger of the Marsh and McLennan businesses in 1904. In the UK, the group grew by adding Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT) in 2019, which brought a large London Market and regional presence into the Marsh family.
Marsh UK is based at Tower Place East, Tower Place, London EC3R 5BU, close to the Lloyd's insurance market. Its smaller-business arm, Marsh Commercial, was created when the regional broker Jelf (founded 1989) was renamed. That business serves clients in the North of England, the South of England and Wales, and Scotland and Northern Ireland, and brought in firms such as Bluefin and Clark Thomson. A 2004 profile gave about 6,450 UK employees at 30 UK locations, but that is old, and we did not find a current UK-only headcount.
Marsh describes its aim as finding "better ways to manage risk" and going "beyond risk to rewards" for clients, colleagues and communities. Its group tagline is "Possibility". These are statements from its own materials and a company directory listing, and we did not find a UK-specific values page. Marsh says it has more than 45,000 colleagues worldwide, though other pages quote different group figures, so check the current number on its site.
Marsh UK employs a wide range of people, not only brokers, and the group's other businesses in the UK, such as Mercer and Oliver Wyman, add consultants and analysts to the mix. Job listings show client executives, client advisory team leaders, risk consultants and managing consultants in strategic risk, working in London, Bristol and other UK cities. Marsh also describes its marine practice as drawing on nearly 600 marine specialists across 12 hubs worldwide, a reminder that the UK team is part of a global network that UK staff can tap into.
