Marshmallow Laser Feast

A London-based creative studio, founded in 2011, that makes immersive installations, virtual-reality films and live experiences that blend nature, science and technology.

About Marshmallow Laser Feast

Marshmallow Laser Feast, often shortened to MLF, is a studio of artists and technologists who make immersive experiences. One directory describes it as creating "extraordinary immersive experiences that blend nature, science, and technology", and its own work has been described as exploring the line between virtual and real-world experiences. That includes virtual reality (VR) films, large installations and live shows, so audiences feel they are inside the story rather than watching it from outside.

The studio is led by Robin McNicholas and Barney Steel and, according to a directory entry, was founded in 2011. Its best-known early work is In the Eyes of the Animal, a 360-degree film that follows the senses of three British forest creatures through a food chain. It was made with laser scans (lidar), drones, bespoke 360 cameras and a binaural soundscape (sound recorded to feel like it comes from all around you) in Grizedale Forest in the Lake District, and it premiered at the AND Festival in 2015 before touring internationally. A version for Google Cardboard also exists. Another early project was New Cinema Lab in 2013, though we found no detail about it.

MLF is a UK studio based in London, according to the Reality Atlas directory. The same directory lists clients and collaborators that include the Tate, National Geographic and Samsung, and says the studio's work has toured globally. It also lists We Live in an Ocean of Air, shown at the Saatchi Gallery in London. The directory puts the team at 11 to 50 people. We could not find a first-party page, so exact studio location and team size should be checked.

The pages we read say little about working culture, and we do not want to invent any. What they do show is a studio that works with scientists, musicians, galleries, brands and event organisers, and that cares about the natural world. The AND Festival page says its work focuses on people-centred, live interactive experiences. That suggests a team that mixes artists, engineers and producers working side by side on unusual projects.

The roles at a studio like this include creative directors, producers, 3D and real-time artists, programmers who make interactive software, sound designers, and technical staff who build and install equipment. It is a mix of art, computing and storytelling, so people with backgrounds in art and design, computing, music or film can all find a place. The studio's own website is the place to see current projects and any opportunities.
