Mavenir UK

The UK arm of Mavenir, a US-headquartered telecoms software company, with Open RAN development in Swindon and a Cambridge centre that grew from the acquired ip.access.

About Mavenir UK

Mavenir develops the software that runs mobile networks. Its products cover the core of a network, which handles voice, video and messaging, and the radio access network or RAN, which links phones to masts. It also makes software that helps phone companies earn money from their services. A big part of its story is Open RAN, an approach that uses open standards so that radio equipment from different suppliers can work together instead of being locked to one maker. Its customers include big operators such as Vodafone, Telefonica and Deutsche Telekom.

Mavenir is headquartered in Richardson, Texas. Wikipedia says it was formed in 2017 by combining Xura, Ranzure and Mitel Mobile, and it later bought other companies including ip.access in 2020. Mavenir describes its goal as "building the future of networks", with a single, software-based, automated network that can run on any cloud. At the Swindon opening in 2021, senior vice president Mikael Rylander said the company was providing tools and open-source software to the radio unit community.

The UK is a real part of Mavenir's engineering. The ip.access purchase gave it a Cambridge base, which became an Open RAN Centre of Innovation, and in April 2021 it opened a development centre in Swindon working on software for Open RAN radio units. The aim was a common management interface for radio units made by different suppliers, supporting the UK government's wish for a wider range of telecoms equipment suppliers. Companies House lists Mavenir UK Limited and Mavenir UK Holdings, which we saw only in search results. The release did not state how many people work in Swindon.

Mikael Rylander and UK-based chief marketing officer Stefano Cantarelli spoke in 2021 about creating "a level playing field" for all vendors, and Mr Cantarelli said Open RAN could give the UK and its companies a chance to lead the global industry. Those are the company's own words. We did not find staff stories. Mavenir later shifted focus, with Wikipedia noting a 2025 move to concentrate on mobile core software and AI, so the exact UK work may have changed.

Teams in a company like this include software engineers who write the code for radio and core network functions, test engineers who check it works with other suppliers' equipment, and systems engineers who design how everything fits together. Cambridge has a long history of wireless and chip research, and Swindon has a growing set of engineering employers. Computer science, electronics, maths and telecoms subjects are the usual routes, and product, customer and finance roles support the engineers.
