UK retirement housing developer · Built Environment & Construction

McCarthy Stone

A Bournemouth-based UK developer of retirement apartments and extra-care housing, which built its first retirement scheme in 1977.

About McCarthy Stone

McCarthy Stone builds and manages retirement housing in the UK. Its main product is Retirement Living: owner-occupied apartments for older people, in developments with shared lounges, a house manager and security. It also builds Retirement Living PLUS, a form of extra-care housing where care and support are provided by in-house services teams and regulated by the Care Quality Commission. Homes can be bought, rented or part-owned through shared ownership, and some are affordable homes. The company says it has built more than 51,000 apartments across 1,100 developments.

Its mission, in its words, is "to make sure you lead a life that is comfortable, enjoyable, independent and fulfilling in your own home". The company says it provides retirement living in the largest share of the UK market. The idea behind retirement living is that people can stay independent in a home designed for later life, with company and help close by, rather than having to move into a care home.

Wikipedia says John McCarthy and Bill Stone became business partners in 1961, and the company built its first retirement housing development in New Milton, Hampshire, in 1977, after which it focused only on retirement housing. By 1984 it was operating nationally. It is headquartered in Bournemouth, on the south coast of England. Its developments are spread across England, Scotland and Wales, and its site search lists schemes in places such as Bath, Lancaster, Poulton-le-Fylde, Newton Mearns and Milngavie. In 2010 it began providing its own management and support services and started care services in its Assisted Living schemes in partnership with Somerset Care Group.

Wikipedia gives 2,433 employees in 2019, an older figure. The pages we read include no staff stories or culture surveys. Because the company provides services to residents as well as building, many of its people work in roles that involve talking and listening to older people, which sets it apart from most housebuilders.

The jobs fall in two groups. On the building side are site managers, surveyors, engineers, planners, land buyers and designers. On the service side are house managers, care and support staff, sales advisers who talk to older customers and their families, and customer care teams. There are also finance, legal and marketing roles at head office. If you are interested in both buildings and caring for people, this combination is unusual. See the company's website for current vacancies.
