Mediatonic

A London games studio, part of Epic Games, behind Fall Guys and Murder by Numbers, with additional studios in Brighton and Leamington Spa.

About Mediatonic

Mediatonic is a British games developer, best known for Fall Guys, the colourful party game where contestants race through obstacle courses. It also made Murder by Numbers, a puzzle mystery game with 90s fashion and a campy sense of humour. It began making Flash games for clients and went on to publish its own titles.

Its website says the studio aims to inspire joy, remove barriers and attract new audiences, and wants to connect millions of people through positive gaming experiences that stay with them for years. Its tagline is "Make it together", and it describes its style as playful, collaborative and colourful.

Mediatonic was founded in 2005 by Dave Bailey and Paul Croft, who were both 21 and students at Brunel University. It grew through work for clients such as PopCap, Big Fish Games and Sega before making original games. Epic Games announced its acquisition in March 2021 and the studio now sits within the Epic Games family while keeping its own name. Its London office, Tonic Towers, is at 111 Buckingham Palace Road, and it also has offices in Brighton and Leamington Spa, plus Madrid.

Wikipedia reports that the company had 230 employees across four studios in June 2020, and that in 2023 parent-level layoffs cut deeply into the studio, although it did not close. The current headcount is not published on the pages we read. The studio describes its people as talented and hardworking, and says it is recruiting for Fall Guys, which is its own description rather than an independent one.

A live game like Fall Guys needs designers, artists and animators, programmers, producers, quality testers, community and player support staff, data specialists and people who run events and seasons. A good way to understand this is to follow a game's seasons and updates and notice how often content changes. Mediatonic's own history, which started with two students working on client projects between lectures, shows that building something small and finishing it can open doors. Mediatonic's founders began by doing client work while still at university, which shows that practical projects and persistence count. Its tagline "Make it together" points to teamwork across art, design, code and production, so being able to work well in a group and take feedback is a skill the studio itself says it values.
