Megaverse

An immersive content studio, linked to Sheffield, that combines theatre, film and gaming with VR, AR and virtual production to make interactive experiences such as Game Changers.

About Megaverse

Megaverse is a creative studio that works where media and technology meet. A Digital Catapult case study describes it as a studio specialising in the convergence of media and technologies, combining theatre, film and gaming with virtual reality, augmented reality and virtual production. It makes custom interactive experiences designed for particular platforms. Its best-known project is Game Changers, a live, interactive online experience about climate activism, in which audiences make decisions that change the story.

Ben Carlin is a co-founder and co-director of Megaverse. He has said he aims to develop new forms of storytelling by combining disciplines such as theatre, film and gaming. For Game Changers, the studio said its mission was to encourage fact-based discussion about climate change and to counter greenwashing and misinformation, especially among younger audiences. The project was a commission from UK Research and Innovation to communicate climate science through gaming, and Megaverse worked with the University of York and Lancaster University on the science. It won a Broadcast Innovation Tech Award and a Game Republic Sustainability Award.

The studio's UK connections are strong, although we could not find a headquarters address. Mr Carlin is also a co-founder of Immerse Sheffield, a meet-up for people interested in extended reality in the Sheffield City Region, and a visiting lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. For Game Changers the team worked at the Advanced Media Production studio at PROTO in Gateshead, where three actors were motion-captured. Megaverse also took part in Digital Catapult's CreativeXR programme in 2019 and in the 2020 Immersive Arcade.

Mr Carlin's other roles show the kind of people the studio draws on: he has been a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's digital cohort and a resident creative technologist at the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain. Digital Catapult names John Ingle as a director at Megaverse. We found no page describing the studio's culture or size, so we have not made any claims about them.

Work in a small immersive studio mixes skills. There are writers and directors from theatre and film, actors and performers who work with motion capture, game and real-time developers, 3D artists, producers who organise live events and partnerships, and people who explain science to young audiences. Backgrounds in drama, film, games, computing or design can all be useful. Check the studio's website for current opportunities.
