The Mercedes works Formula 1 team, designing and building its cars in Brackley and its engines in Brixworth, Northamptonshire.
Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team is the works Formula 1 team of Mercedes-AMG. It takes part in the FIA Formula One World Championship, and more than 1,000 people design, develop, manufacture and race its cars. Its drivers are George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
The team won seven consecutive Drivers' and Constructors' World Championship doubles from 2014 to 2020 and then a record eighth Constructors' title in 2021. Behind those results are people working in aerodynamics, design, manufacturing, electronics, data analysis, logistics, finance and many other areas. Niki Lauda, a champion driver and long-time non-executive chairman, is remembered on the team's website.
The team summarises its mindset as "All in Performance" and its guiding principle as "Best Team wins. Best driver wins. In that order." It states four values: Accountable, Brave, Competitive and Selfless, each with three supporting traits such as self-critical, innovative, relentless and collaborative. It says it needs the courage to fail and that an inclusive culture is a competitive advantage. These are the team's own statements.
Its home in the UK is its two Technology Centres in Northamptonshire. Brackley is the chassis base, with a wind tunnel and race bays updated in 2021. Brixworth, about 28 miles away, is the base of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, which has more than 700 people and has built every Mercedes-badged F1 engine since 1995. Brixworth has supplied Aston Martin, Williams and McLaren as well as Mercedes. Toto Wolff is Team Principal and CEO, and the management team includes a Chief People Officer and a Technical Director.
A race team needs far more than drivers and engineers. It employs machinists and composite technicians who build parts, mechanics who work in the pit lane, electronics and software developers, simulation experts, supply chain and logistics staff, and finance, legal, people and communications teams. If you enjoy problem solving under time pressure, this is one of the most demanding workplaces in the sector, so read the team's published values carefully. The management page also names a General Counsel and Company Secretary, a Chief Financial Officer, a Chief Commercial Officer and a Chief of Staff, which shows the range of professional jobs in a racing business.
