Met Office

The UK's national weather and climate service, which uses data science and machine learning to improve weather and climate prediction.

About Met Office

The Met Office describes itself as "the authority on weather accuracy and climate prediction". It helps individuals, industries and government make decisions. Machine learning is part of its research and development.

A 2024 foundation-level listing said the post would contribute to its AI4NWP and AI4Climate programmes, working with internal and external partners on weather and climate modelling.

The listing was based in Exeter with optional hybrid working. Applicants must be eligible to live and work in the UK, and security clearance is needed, which generally means three of the last five years in the UK.

The listing welcomed returners and career changers and said selection could include a presentation, written test or scenario-based activity. It recommended showing evidence with the CARL method (Context, Action, Result, Learning).

The Met Office also advertises industrial placements for data engineers in Exeter. The 2024 foundation role paid a base of £26,954 (as at 2024), with a Civil Service pension and a £2,200 allowance. Check Bright Network and the Met Office careers hub for current openings.
