Mimecast

A cyber security company with its global headquarters in London, best known for protecting email and collaboration tools. Owned by the private equity firm Permira since 2022.

About Mimecast

Mimecast protects organisations from cyber attacks that arrive through email and the tools people use to work together, such as chat and file sharing. Most attacks on companies start with a message that tricks someone into clicking a bad link or handing over a password (this is called phishing), so stopping those messages, and teaching staff to spot them, is a big part of what Mimecast does. It began as a cloud service to manage and back up email for Microsoft and Google platforms and has grown into a wider security business. It describes itself as an advanced email and collaboration security company, with more than 40,000 customers in its January 2024 press release.

Mimecast was founded in 2003 by Peter Bauer, who later became chief executive, and Neil Murray, the chief technology officer. Its global headquarters is in London, with its North American headquarters in Lexington, Massachusetts. It listed on the Nasdaq in 2015 and has been privately held since May 2022, when the British private equity firm Permira acquired it. Marc van Zadelhoff became chief executive in January 2024. Its careers site lists the London office at 1 Finsbury Avenue, and shows UK roles in London and remote.

We did not find a formal mission statement. In its own words, since 2003 it has helped organisations prevent harm and operate securely under the banner "Work Protected", and its careers page says its aim is to help organisations "work protected". It also says it prioritises career growth and development.

Its main products include Advanced Email Security, Collaboration Threat Protection (for chat and file-sharing tools), Incydr Data Protection (spotting risky data movement by staff), the Aware Governance and Compliance Suite, Engage Security Awareness (training that helps people recognise attacks), DMARC Analyzer (which helps stop criminals faking a company's email address), Managed Threat Response and Email Archive.

For young people, Mimecast is a good example of a UK-founded company that grew into a global security business. Its early careers page describes a Business Development Representative (BDR) programme lasting 12 to 18 months or more, with global BDR teams and dedicated career pathways. The company says the training combines online and in-person learning, mentorship and recognition programmes, and that pathways lead to roles such as account executive, account manager, sales engineer, sales enablement, field marketing and event coordination. It says the programme is open to graduates and non-graduates alike and looks for "a learner mindset, someone who is proactive and looking to establish a career in cybersecurity", working with Marketing and Sales in a "fun, fast-paced environment" (company claims). The page does not say which country each BDR team is based in, so ask whether a UK place is available.
