The trade association for the UK's mobile network operators, EE, Virgin Media O2 and VodafoneThree, speaking for them on coverage, spectrum and policy.
Mobile UK is the trade association for the UK's mobile network operators. The operators are the companies that own and run the mobile networks that your phone connects to. Its members, listed on its website, are EE, Virgin Media O2 and VodafoneThree. Because those three companies between them run the main mobile networks in the UK, Mobile UK speaks on behalf of most of the country's mobile coverage. It does not sell mobile services itself. Its job is to put the industry's view to government, regulators and the public.
Mobile UK describes its mission as working with government, regulators, civil society and others to use mobile technology to improve customers' lives and the UK's prosperity. It was formed in March 2016, and its chief executive, Hamish MacLeod, has led it since then. Before that he chaired the Mobile Broadband Group, an earlier industry group, for 14 years. Its work covers campaigns, policy reports, responses to public consultations, and codes of practice, plus public information on topics such as 5G, accessibility and mobile facts, and news from the industry.
The company's registered office is at 1 Carnegie Road, Newbury, Berkshire, and it is registered in England and Wales. Much of its work is aimed at policy-makers in Westminster and the devolved governments, and its news pages show it responding to Scottish, Welsh and English committees on issues such as planning rules for masts, rural coverage and the Shared Rural Network. We did not find a list of other offices, so it seems to be a small organisation rather than one with many sites.
Its team page shows how small it is: Hamish MacLeod as chief executive, Gareth Elliott as director of policy and communications, who joined in 2017 and focuses on mobile coverage and future infrastructure, and a personal assistant who also supports stakeholder work and the monthly newsletter. We found no culture statement or staff stories, so we cannot say more about working life there. A body of this size tends to be close-knit, with each person covering a wide range of tasks.
The roles in a trade body of this kind are mainly policy, public affairs, communications and research, plus events and administration. These suit people who enjoy politics, law, economics, geography or writing and want to understand how technology rules are made. Mobile UK's topics, such as getting better 5G coverage and planning permission for new masts, link directly to how mobile networks are built and used. Its website lists news and any current openings.
