A London tabletop games publisher behind Star Trek Adventures, Fallout and Dune roleplaying and board games.
Modiphius Entertainment is a tabletop games publisher based in Fulham, London. It makes roleplaying games, board games and miniatures wargames, many based on well-known worlds. These include Star Trek Adventures, Fallout: Wasteland Warfare and the Fallout roleplaying game, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, Terry Pratchett's Discworld: Adventures in Ankh-Morpork and a Mass Effect board game. It has also produced Thunderbirds, Conan, Kung Fu Panda and John Carter of Mars games.
The company was founded in 2012 by married couple Rita and Chris Birch to publish their first game, Achtung! Cthulhu, which raised £177,000 on Kickstarter in 2013. We did not find a formal mission statement in the pages we read, and values are not described in the sources. In 2018 it released the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare wargame, and in 2024 it brought out a second edition of the Star Trek Adventures core rules.
Modiphius works by licensing stories people already love and turning them into games you play around a table, and by working with original creators. It has made a deluxe edition of Ironsworn: Starforged with its creator Shawn Tomkin. Its Dune roleplaying game won a Gold ENNIE for Best Writing, which shows the weight placed on good writing and design. It licensed Terry Pratchett's Discworld in February 2024, which shows how it keeps adding new worlds to its range.
Ownership is shared between Chris Birch, Marharyta Kokhna and two others, so it is still a founder-led firm. It also works with outside writers and artists, such as Sarah Newton on the Achtung! Cthulhu adventures and Banana Chan on the Dune writing team, so a lot of its creative work is shared among freelancers as well as employees. It also released Fallout: Wasteland Wanderer, a solo roleplaying game, in 2026.
Tabletop publishers employ game designers, editors, artists, producers, marketing and community staff, and people running licensing, sales and logistics. It is a good place to look if you love roleplaying or board games and enjoy writing, art or organising projects. A good way to prepare is to join a local roleplaying group, write adventures or rules for friends, or practise art and layout. Clear writing, an eye for detail and the ability to work with licence holders and freelancers are all useful in a publisher working with famous worlds.
