Monzo

One of the UK's best-known digital banks, run through a mobile app. Founded in London in 2015, it has offices in London and Cardiff and says it is piloting early-careers programmes.

About Monzo

Monzo is a British online bank that you use through a phone app. There are no high-street branches. You can open a current account, set up savings pots (separate pots for money you want to set aside), borrow, and see your spending update the moment you pay. Wikipedia reports more than 15 million customers as at May 2026, which makes it one of the biggest UK digital banks.

It started in London on 18 February 2015 as a company called Mondo, founded by Tom Blomfield, Gary Dolman, Jason Bates, Jonas Huckestein and Paul Rippon. It was renamed Monzo in 2016 and won a full UK banking licence from the Prudential Regulation Authority and the Financial Conduct Authority in April 2017. Its headquarters is in London. Its careers page lists offices in London, Cardiff, Dublin and Barcelona, with many roles remote or flexible, and each job advert says where the role is usually based.

Monzo says it is "building a bank that works for everyone" and "the bank of the future". It describes being "focused on solving problems, rather than selling financial products", with the goal of making customers' finances simpler and putting them in control from their smartphones.

Monzo's products include current accounts, savings, loans, business accounts, Flex (a buy-now-pay-later and credit card feature), insurance and paid plans. It has announced plans to buy the mortgage broker Habito. Its teams are organised into squads, collectives and disciplines, which are small groups built around a customer problem rather than a traditional department. Monzo also says it contributes to open-source software, meaning code it shares publicly, and engages with its customer community.

Monzo describes its workplace as open, collaborative and inclusive and says it wants people from varied backgrounds. Its careers page lists benefits such as 26 days' holiday plus bank holidays, a £1,000 yearly learning budget, private healthcare, free breakfast in offices and a paid sabbatical of eight weeks after five years. On early careers, Monzo says it is "piloting early careers programmes" and occasionally hires for internships and placements. One example is the Associate Data Scientist Internship for summer 2027 in London, with a deadline of 1 November 2026. It lasts at least 12 weeks, pays £42,500 pro rata, is hybrid with two office days a week, and is open to students graduating in 2028 in a STEM or computer science degree who have the unrestricted right to work in the UK. Interns work on a real project using Python, SQL and Looker. We did not find apprenticeships or a graduate scheme.
