Morrisons

A Bradford-founded UK supermarket group that makes much of its own fresh food and sells through Market Street counters.

About Morrisons

Morrisons is a British supermarket group, trading as Wm Morrison Supermarkets Limited. Its superstores put fresh produce in an area called Market Street, with butcher, fishmonger, bakery and other counters. Its company facts say it runs 497 supermarkets, manufacturing and logistics sites, about 1,600 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and around 400 in-store cafes. It has its own manufacturing arm, with 18 sites making meat, fruit and veg, fish, bakery and fresh food, which it says produces more than half the fresh food sold in its stores.

William Morrison began the business in June 1899 as an egg and butter stall in Bradford. A first shop opened in 1958 and in 1961 a store called Victoria opened in a former cinema in Bradford. The company went public in 1967 and its 100th store opened in 1999. It bought Safeway in 2004, which brought it into southern England, and went back into convenience in 2016 with Morrisons Daily. Sir Ken Morrison took over the stalls from his father in 1952.

Morrisons states its purpose as "Making good food affordable for everyone," and says it is proud of its roots. It calls itself a Yorkshire-based food retailer that grew from a market stall in Bradford. It also says it aims to be supplied by net zero emission British farms by 2030, and its For Farmers range, launched in 2015, returns part of the retail price directly to farmers. The pages we read did not list formal values.

The company is based in Bradford, and in 2006 about 1,500 head office colleagues moved into a 331,000 square foot building in Thornbury, Bradford. Its company facts say it employs over 100,000 colleagues, with Community Champions working in stores across the UK. It says it is the largest employer of craft apprentices in the UK, training hundreds each year in butchery, bakery and fishmongery, and it runs a Quieter Hour from 9am to 10am each Saturday for shoppers with sensory needs. It also says it won Employer of the Year four years running at the Grocer Gold awards, the latest in 2013, which is dated evidence.

The jobs are varied. Its careers pages show customer assistants for service, online, market street and cafe counters, butchers, shift leaders, trading managers, home delivery drivers and multi-skilled engineers, plus buying and procurement. Its manufacturing sites include a flower site in Derby with over 300 florists and two seafood sites in Grimsby with 430 colleagues, so factory, farming and logistics roles sit alongside the shop floor.
