An East London women's fashion label, founded by Maia Norman, known for easy, wearable clothes and a sustainability-first approach under designer Amy Powney.

About Mother of Pearl

Mother of Pearl is a British women's fashion label that makes dresses, shirts, knitwear and other clothes, with a reputation for easy, versatile pieces that mix well with a customer's own wardrobe. It describes itself as a sustainable luxury label, and an article about its former designer says it became a sustainability-first brand. Over the years it has also done collaborations with other labels and retailers, including a collection with John Lewis, and it has shown its collections at London Fashion Week. It sits in the middle ground between the high street and top-end luxury.

The label was founded by Maia Norman, who remains creative director. Amy Powney joined in 2006 after studying fashion design at Kingston University, and rose to become creative director. In 2017 she won the BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund, which helped her launch the No Frills collection in 2018, a core range made from organic and natural materials with a transparent supply chain. Her stated mission was to create a sustainable collection "from field to finished garment". She also made a documentary called Fashion Reimagined in 2023. In February 2025 she stepped down to start her own brand, Akyn. The sources do not say who now leads design, and we did not find a year the label was founded.

Mother of Pearl is London-based, and an older profile places its studio in East London's creative scene rather than the centre of the city. Its collections have been shown during London Fashion Week, and sold by British retailers including John Lewis as well as international stockists. We did not find a current address, so check the company's website for the studio location.

The label's own pages give little about its working culture, so we have kept to what others have written. A profile described a small, passionate team around Ms Norman and Ms Powney, with the brand aiming for quality, accessible pieces that suit busy women. The sustainability focus was strongly led by Ms Powney, who gave a talk on fixing fashion at TED Countdown in 2024, and the effect of her departure on the company is not something we could check.

A design-led label like this employs designers and pattern cutters, production and sourcing staff who work with factories and fabric suppliers, wholesale and sales teams that deal with shops, e-commerce, marketing and press staff, and finance and operations people. In a small studio, people often take on many tasks, which can be a good way to see the whole process from sketch to shop floor. Students who like fashion design, textiles or business will find it useful to follow. The company's website is the place to see what is open.
