Motorway

A London-based online used-car marketplace where private sellers get offers from verified dealers through a daily auction and have their car collected.

About Motorway

Motorway is a website and app for selling your car. You enter your registration and a few details, get a valuation, and your car is shown to a network of verified dealers who bid in a daily online auction. The highest bidder wins, the car is collected from your home, and you are paid into your bank account.

The company was founded in July 2017 by Tom Leathes, Alex Buttle and Harry Jones. Its Built In profile gives the mission as to "build a better used-car market for everyone", using technology to deliver a strong customer experience. Its own pages say selling a car used to be difficult and it was created to change that. The tagline is "This is the way to sell your car. This is the Motorway." Motorway also says it charges no fee if a car does not sell, and that it supports sellers with outstanding finance. Dealers bid in £1 steps through an automatic system, and each car comes with a detailed condition profile.

Motorway's headquarters are in London, with a second office in Brighton. It reports more than 8,000 verified dealers, around 9,000 cars listed each week, over a million people helped and more than 100,000 Trustpilot reviews (company claims). Cars are collected across the UK. Its work with dealers covers payment, finance settlement and condition reports, so it has a large operations side as well as technology. The company says over a million people have used the service and that more than 250,000 cars had been sold through it by the time of one profile. The first public coverage of the company was a seed funding announcement by TechCrunch in its early days, which helps place it as a UK start-up that grew quickly.

A profile lists about 400 to 450 employees and open roles in mobile and front-end engineering, platform, AI, security operations, product design and total rewards. Public sources said little about internal values, so ask about them if you apply. The company is plainly technology-led, which is a good place for people who like data, product design and customer experience.

If you are interested in how online marketplaces work, Motorway is a useful example: it connects two groups, sellers and dealers, and has teams for pricing, customer support, dealer relations, engineering and design. It offers a view into how a modern consumer technology business is built from scratch.
