National World

A UK regional news publisher running more than 100 titles and websites including The Scotsman, The Yorkshire Post and The News Letter.

About National World

National World is a British regional and local news publisher. It operates more than 100 newspapers and websites across England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, including The Scotsman, The Yorkshire Post, The Portsmouth News, The Sheffield Star and Belfast's The News Letter. In Northern Ireland it publishes 22 titles through JPIMedia NI and Derry Journal Newspapers, including the Derry Journal.

Its new owner, Media Concierge, describes the aim as to "build a sustainable and independent news business rooted in trusted, community-based journalism". Chief executive Malcolm Denmark has talked about "relationships, responsibility, and local impact" as guiding priorities and a longer-term view that is not focused on short-term results.

National World was set up in 2019 by the media executive David Montgomery and bought the former Johnston Press business, JPIMedia, in January 2021. That business was renamed National World Publishing in April 2022. In 2023 it bought the Midland News Association, publisher of the Shropshire Star and Express and Star, and in 2025 Media Concierge took full ownership, so it is now privately owned. Wikipedia lists its headquarters as Leeds. Titles are spread across the UK, so newsrooms exist in places like Edinburgh, Yorkshire, Hampshire, Sheffield, Belfast and Derry.

The company has also launched digital brands: nationalworld.com opened in March 2021 as a national news site, with city sites such as ManchesterWorld, LiverpoolWorld and GlasgowWorld, and Shots!, a football and true-crime website with a Freeview channel (channel 276). It has bought smaller publishers such as Insider Media and the Rotherham Advertiser, and since taking over JPIMedia it has reportedly launched sixteen new titles and made seven further acquisitions. That gives it a range of roles: reporters, sub-editors, photographers, video and audience teams, sales and advertising staff, developers and print production.

The owner has said it wants to give National World the resources and independence to keep serving its communities, and it thanked staff for their dedication during the takeover. These are the company's own statements. For anyone who wants a career close to communities, from city news to football, regional publishers offer real responsibility early on.
