NERA Economic Consulting

A global economic consultancy, part of the Marsh group, with a London office hiring economic analysts.

About NERA Economic Consulting

NERA Economic Consulting is a firm of economists. Companies, law firms and governments hire it when a high-stakes question needs careful numbers behind the answer. Typical examples are whether a merger would harm customers, how an energy or transport market should be regulated, or how much money a company lost in a legal dispute. Its people use economics, finance and data analysis, and often give expert evidence in court or to regulators.

NERA's full name is National Economic Research Associates. Wikipedia says it was founded on 10 April 1961 and is headquartered in New York City, and describes it as the first consulting firm dedicated to applying microeconomic theory (the study of how individual markets and firms behave) systematically to legal and regulatory matters. Its website notes its 65th anniversary. It is part of Oliver Wyman, which is owned by Marsh McLennan, and a 2027 internship listing places it within Marsh McLennan Management Consulting. That listing says it has more than 25 offices across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. In the UK it has a London office.

NERA's website headline is "Momentous challenges require certainty", and it says it gives clients clarity and confidence through rigorous, defensible analysis. An earlier job listing said it values client and project success, professional development and fun, and stresses academic rigour, objectivity and independence. These are the firm's own statements.

The website highlights work on antitrust and competition (rules that stop companies unfairly dominating a market), arbitration, asbestos litigation and UK trucks litigation. Listings describe consulting on energy, climate and environmental policy, regulation, markets, infrastructure, finance and litigation. Day to day, analysts research literature and data, apply economic theory to the facts of a case, clean and analyse data, and draft reports, memos and presentations. Wikipedia reports that a NERA study on climate policy costs was cited by the US government in 2017 and criticised by others; NERA said its results had been used selectively.

NERA says its London environment is collegial, with chances to learn from colleagues at all levels, training, firm-sponsored social events and a buddy for new joiners. These are its own claims. For early careers, a Summer Intern 2027 role in London is listed for students in the final year of an economics degree, or on a Master's or PhD (ideally in the penultimate year). It asks for a CV, cover letter and transcripts, comfort with Excel, Stata, R or Python, and the right to work in the UK. Work is hybrid, with at least three office days a week. Pay is described only as competitive. An older Research Officer and Economic Analyst listing (2021) asked for a degree plus a Master's or PhD in economics, finance or similar, so check NERA's careers page for current analyst routes.
