NESO (National Energy System Operator)

The National Energy System Operator, which keeps Great Britain's electricity and gas systems balanced, with a higher apprenticeship, placements and an 18-month graduate programme.

About NESO (National Energy System Operator)

NESO, the National Energy System Operator, works to make sure supply meets demand at all times so Great Britain has the energy it needs. Its work covers strategic planning, security of supply, system operations, connections, energy markets, and data and AI.

NESO says its work supports the government's Clean Power 2030 ambition and the net zero transition. We did not find a separate formal values statement on the page we read.

Its early careers placements are based in Warwick or Wokingham, and apprentice vacancies have been advertised at both. Learning for the apprenticeship is split between hands-on work and college in the East Midlands.

NESO highlights mentoring, networking, volunteering and hybrid working depending on business needs, and a dedicated buddy for placement students. These are its own descriptions.

Three routes are advertised. A three-year Trainee Power System Engineer Higher Apprenticeship starts September 2027 and pays £30,000 a year, leading to a Level 4 qualification. A 12-month Industrial Placement starts June 2027 and pays £26,000. An 18-month Graduate Programme starts September 2027 with three six-month placements and pays £35,000 plus a £2,000 welcome payment and a performance bonus. Benefits include 26 days' leave plus bank holidays. The page did not list entry requirements or deadlines, so check the vacancy.
