Netflix UK

The UK arm of the global streaming service, with UK production activity including a hub at Shepperton Studios and many British series.

About Netflix UK

Netflix is a global streaming service, and in the UK it both offers programmes to subscribers and makes them. In July 2019 it announced a major UK production hub at Shepperton Studios, owned by Pinewood, with 14 sound studios, workshops and office space. The hub's first production was The Old Guard, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood.

We did not find Netflix's own mission wording on the pages we read, so none is quoted here. In its Shepperton announcement Ted Sarandos, chief content officer, said the investment would ensure that British creators and producers have first rate production facilities. That gives a clue to how Netflix talks about its UK work: supporting British creative talent. Film director Ridley Scott, a former joint owner of Shepperton, said he has made 1,000 or more commercials and productions there, including the original Alien in 1979.

Netflix's UK presence is shown in its production work around the country. The announcement said that in the previous year over 25,000 cast, crew and extras worked on nearly 20 Netflix originals and co-productions across Britain. Examples named were Outlaw King in Scotland, Sex Education in Wales, The Crown at Elstree and elsewhere, and The English Game in Manchester. These figures are from 2019 and are dated. Other titles named for the coming year were Cursed, Jingle Jangle and The English Game, a Julian Fellowes series filmed in Manchester, which shows productions spread beyond the south-east of England.

Behind the screen, a streaming company like this employs people in content and programming, production management, marketing, communications, legal, data and engineering. Many UK crew are hired project by project through the productions, rather than by Netflix directly. The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron and Kiki Layne, is an action drama based on a comic series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. Netflix's interest in making shows in Britain, rather than only buying them, is why production, location, post-production and facilities roles matter so much to its UK footprint.

We did not confirm a Netflix UK office address or headcount from the sources we read, and we have not researched careers pages. Check Netflix's own site for its London office and current roles. The 2019 announcement also said Shepperton would host new and existing television series and feature films as Netflix expanded its UK network.
