NFU Mutual

A UK mutual insurer, owned by its members, with a three-year graduate scheme based at its Tiddington head office.

About NFU Mutual

NFU Mutual is a UK insurance and financial services mutual, which means it is owned by its members rather than shareholders. It is best known for insurance for farms, homes, cars and businesses, along with life insurance, pensions, savings and investments, and financial advice. Most policies are sold through a UK-wide Agency Network of local, self-employed agents.

Wikipedia says NFU Mutual was founded in 1910 in Stratford-upon-Avon by seven farmers as the Midlands Farmers' Mutual Insurance Society. James Robertson Black became its first managing director in 1912 and ran it from his farmhouse. In 1919 it became the official insurer of the National Farmers Union and took the NFU Mutual name. The current head office is on Tiddington Road in Tiddington, just outside Stratford-upon-Avon, and opened in 1984. It also has a Channel Islands business with offices in Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney. Wikipedia reports around 925,000 members.

We did not find a short mission statement on the pages we read. Wikipedia says the company has no shareholders and that members can vote at the annual general meeting. Graduates say that as a mutual there is "a strong focus on long-term development rather than short-term solutions". Its charity work includes the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust, set up in 1998, and the Farm Safety Foundation, set up in 2014 to address farm safety and mental health.

Its work covers home, motor, commercial and farm insurance, pensions and investments, and inheritance tax planning. Subsidiaries listed include Islands Insurance Group in the Channel Islands and Risk Management Services, a health and safety company set up in 1997. Claims teams handle what happens when something goes wrong, while underwriters decide what risks to cover and at what price.

The company aims for an environment where people "feel respected, encouraged and able to be themselves", which is its own description. Graduates get a line manager, a placement manager and an Early Careers team, plus a graduate WhatsApp group before starting, and hybrid working mixes home and office days. The graduate scheme lasts three years and includes training and professional insurance qualifications. A listing for the claims and underwriting scheme starting September 2026 showed a salary of £30,987, a minimum 2.2 degree in any subject, Stratford-upon-Avon head office with time at a service centre in York or Bristol, and a CII (Chartered Insurance Institute) qualification route. That intake closed on 3 November 2025, so check for the next one. An earlier claims handler apprenticeship listing, now closed, paid £25,000 in Stratford-upon-Avon and asked for four GCSEs at grade 5 or above including English and Maths, with 20% protected study time.
