NHS Blood and Transplant

The NHS body that collects blood, organs, tissues and stem cells from donors and gets them to patients in UK hospitals.

About NHS Blood and Transplant

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) collects donations of blood, organs, tissues and stem cells from volunteers and delivers them to people who need them. It also researches new treatments and supports families through the donation process.

Its stated purpose is to save and improve lives by getting blood, tissues and solid organs to patients in hospitals across the UK, and its ambition is to "build a world where every patient has the donation they need". Its three values are Caring, Expert and Quality.

NHSBT says it supplies around 260 hospitals and 29 UK Transplant Centres. A 2025 case study describes a manufacturing site at Colindale in London supplied by 26 permanent donor centres, and apprenticeship listings show roles at sites such as Speke (Liverpool) and Filton (Bristol).

It says it has about 6,400 people, including nurses, scientists, healthcare assistants and specialists in technology and logistics. These are the organisation's own descriptions.

A case study published on 8 August 2025 describes T Level industry placements of up to 45 days for 16 to 19 year olds at Colindale, with a staff mentor, and says students can go on to paid healthcare technical officer jobs or an apprenticeship leading to biomedical scientist. Apprenticeship listings have included a Level 2 Tissue Bank Support Worker apprenticeship and business admin apprenticeships. We did not find a graduate scheme, entry requirements or pay figures, so check the NHSBT careers site.
