NHS Business Services Authority

A national NHS body based in Newcastle that runs central services such as the NHS pension scheme and payments to pharmacists and dentists.

About NHS Business Services Authority

The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) provides central services to NHS bodies, patients and the public. These include managing the NHS pension scheme, digital and technology services, issuing European Health Insurance Cards, and paying pharmacists and dentists.

We did not find a formal mission or values statement on the pages we read. One article says it aims to offer "a broad range of opportunities" for people to build skills and experience.

Its national headquarters is in Newcastle. An older regional news report (undated, around 2017) said it had two offices in Newcastle and over 1,300 staff in the region. We did not confirm current headcount or other sites.

The chief executive, Alistair McDonald, started with a finance apprenticeship and says "there are many routes for young people" into a career. That is the organisation's own message.

NHSBSA has apprentices and placement students, and has offered internships to potential future apprentices. It runs a Structured Apprenticeship Pathway and works with North East schools, including a 16 year old from Studio West who works in its Technology department two days a week. A 2024 'Ask an apprentice' blog also exists, and a Digital Degree Apprentice vacancy was listed in Newcastle. We did not find ages, pay or entry requirements for current intakes.
