nPlan

A London-based company that uses artificial intelligence trained on thousands of past projects to forecast whether big construction projects will finish on time.

About nPlan

nPlan makes software that predicts how construction and infrastructure projects will turn out. Large projects such as railways, data centres, hospitals and water schemes often finish late or cost more than planned. nPlan studies the schedules of finished projects and uses that history, together with machine learning (computer systems that learn patterns from data), to forecast how a new project is likely to go. Its products include Portfolio, for managing many projects at once, Insights Pro and related tools for single projects, and Schedule Studio, which uses AI to build and edit project schedules. Its customers include owners and operators, main contractors and consultants working on buildings, utilities, energy and transport.

The company's website closes its leadership page with the line "Solving the project overrun problem", which is the nearest thing to a mission statement we found. It describes its team as "Smart, experienced and kind. Not the heroes we deserve." The company was founded by Dev Amratia, now chief executive, and Alan Mosca, chief technology officer. Mr Amratia is a chartered engineer who spent nine years delivering energy construction projects on three continents, worked as a project manager at Shell, and later worked in UK government where he helped to deliver the 2017 review of artificial intelligence. Mr Mosca had previously worked as a technologist in quantitative finance.

nPlan's headquarters is at Second Home Spitalfields, 68-80 Hanbury Street, London E1 5JL. Its leadership page lists a finance and operations vice president, a commercial director and an operations director, plus a board that includes outside directors and academic advisers from the University of Virginia and the University of Oxford. UK customers named in its news pages include Anglian Water, which uses its planning software for its AMP8 investment period from 2025 to 2030. It also works overseas, for example with a consortium delivering the North East Link road project in Melbourne, but its base and many of its customers are in the UK.

The company shows certification logos for Cyber Essentials, SOC reporting and ISO 27001, which are security standards that matter when a company handles customers' project data. It won an Open Innovation Challenge run by Elia Group, a European electricity grid operator. We found no values page.

Teams at a company like this include machine-learning engineers, software engineers, data scientists, product managers, planners and project controls specialists who understand construction schedules, customer-success staff, and finance and operations teams. People from engineering, maths, computer science, physics, project management and construction degrees all fit. If you like puzzles about how to make big projects run on time, this is a way to combine construction with data.
