London-founded AI infrastructure company that builds and runs data centres and GPU computing for training and running AI, with sites in Norway and the UK.
Nscale builds the computing power that AI runs on. Training a large AI model needs huge numbers of specialist chips, called GPUs, housed in large data centres with lots of electricity and cooling. Nscale describes itself as a vertically integrated AI infrastructure company: it owns and runs the stack from energy and data centres to GPU computing and software, and rents that capacity to AI companies, businesses and governments.
The company was founded in 2024 in London by Josh Payne, an Australian who is its chief executive. Wikipedia says Nscale was spun out of Arkon Energy, an infrastructure business, though the sources do not fully explain the connection. London is the only headquarters listed. Philippe Sachs, its President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, led some of its early investment rounds.
Nscale says its mission is to build the advanced infrastructure, systems and solutions that help AI practitioners, enterprises and governments build and scale their most important AI systems. Its first operational site, in Glomfjord in Norway, is powered by hydropower.
It operates data centres in Norway, in Glomfjord and Narvik, and in the UK, in Loughton, with partner sites in places such as Stavanger, Oslo, Hayes and Iceland, and it has talked about larger campuses in Texas and West Virginia. Its services include on-demand GPU and CPU computing, a managed Kubernetes service, inference endpoints for running AI models, and tools for fine-tuning them. Wikipedia reports partnerships with Microsoft, Aker, NVIDIA, Nokia and Dell, though the details of some deals are described inconsistently.
Nscale lists five values, including invent boldly, own the outcome, and move fast but stay humble, and describes its people as builders with no egos, only progress. It is a young, fast-growing company, which can mean unusually quick progression. Its pages do not list specific openings or early-careers programmes, so students should check the careers page.
