A Cambridge battery company making ultra-fast-charging batteries based on research from the University of Cambridge.
Nyobolt makes high-power batteries that can charge extremely quickly. Its technology grew out of about ten years of research at the University of Cambridge, led by battery scientist Professor Clare Grey, and is licensed from the university. The company was co-founded by its chief executive, Dr Sai Shivareddy, who has led battery and supercapacitor product teams around the world. The batteries use niobium-based materials and are designed to charge fast, last a long time and keep working in very hot or cold conditions.
Nyobolt does not publish a formal mission statement on the pages we read. Its own wording describes a team that has "pioneered a new class of battery technology" with record-setting fast charging, and its early case study says the technology supports "the transition to a green, sustainable future" and tackles "charge anxiety" by letting devices charge much faster. Its chief executive has said it makes sense to start with premium, high-performance uses before mainstream cars.
Nyobolt is based in Cambridge, with its address listed at Evolution Business Park, Cambridge (postcode CB24). Its own news page says it operates across the UK, the US and Asia. An early press report said it had about 25 people and planned to expand its materials development facility in Cambridge. Its current application areas include power for AI data centres, warehouse robots and humanoid robots, and mobility, and it has been named as the ultra-fast-charging battery partner for the Digit 5 robot from Agility Robotics.
The company describes its team as combining experience from Tesla, Lotus, Samsung, DuPont, Dyson, General Electric, A123, Innovate UK and Arthur D. Little. A recent hire, Shane Davies, leads software and controls and has more than 25 years in the automotive industry, starting his career at a Cambridge engineering firm. These descriptions are the company's own, so ask about day-to-day culture if you speak to the team. Nyobolt holds ISO 9001:2015 quality approval, which suggests careful, well-documented ways of working.
Roles in a company like this include battery scientists, chemists, electrical and mechanical engineers, software and controls engineers, manufacturing and quality staff, and commercial and operations teams. Nyobolt has not published a headcount or culture statement on the pages we read, so the best way to learn more is to follow its news and blog and read the stories of the people it has hired.
