The UK arm of a global underwater-robotics and offshore engineering company, based mainly in Aberdeen and running remotely operated vehicles in the North Sea.
Oceaneering is a global engineering company whose best-known work is operating remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs. An ROV is an underwater robot that is driven from the surface by a pilot using cameras and controls. Oceaneering's UK business uses them for inspection, subsea installation support and decommissioning in the North Sea, where oil, gas and wind projects need work done on the seabed. The company also makes cables and umbilicals, which are the bundled cables and pipes that carry power, signals and fluids to equipment on the seabed.
Oceaneering's website uses the tagline '60 Years of Solving the Unsolvable', which shows how long the company has been going. The pages we could read about its mission, vision and values were only linked, not shown, so we cannot quote its values. What the news items say is that the UK business is trusted for hard offshore jobs and has been first in its field more than once. It carried out the first onshore remote piloting of an ROV in the UK sector, for bp, west of Shetland. That means the pilot controlled the robot from a control room on land, not from a ship.
In the UK, the main base is Aberdeen. In 2019 Oceaneering said its Aberdeen operations would be brought together by merging seven properties into one office and a new purpose-built workshop. It also has a cable manufacturing site at Rosyth in Scotland, which marked its 25th anniversary and received a 'Fit 4 Offshore Renewables' status, a sign it works for the offshore wind industry. We did not find evidence of other UK sites, so we have not listed any. The UK business has won North Sea contracts for decommissioning, inspection and installation support.
We found little about day-to-day culture. The remote piloting example shows the company is moving some work from offshore ships to onshore control rooms, which can change what a job looks like. A job board listing for ROV pilot technicians and supervisors in the United Kingdom suggests the main frontline roles, though we did not use it as evidence of hiring.
The roles at a company like this include ROV pilots and technicians, supervisors, mechanical and electrical engineers, software and control engineers, project managers, cable factory production staff, health and safety specialists, and office teams in finance, supply chain and human resources. Practical engineering and electronics skills are valued, but computing is playing a larger part as more of the work is done remotely. Check the Oceaneering website for current UK roles.
