A UK property portal started by estate agents in 2015 as a challenger to Rightmove and Zoopla, now part of the property data firm CoStar Group.
OnTheMarket is a UK property website where people search for homes to buy and rent, including commercial and overseas properties. It is best known for "Only With Us", a feature where agents can show a listing on OnTheMarket at least 24 hours before it appears on Rightmove or Zoopla, and for tools such as Wish List, which filters results by what a buyer wants, and Ask The Agent, which lets people register interest in homes that are not yet advertised. It also offers software for agents, built on a small software company it bought called Glanty and relaunched in 2022.
The business grew out of estate agents' frustration with the two bigger portals. In 2013 agents including Knight Frank, Savills, Strutt & Parker, Chestertons, Douglas & Gordon and Glentree Estates founded a company called Agents' Mutual, and the OnTheMarket website launched in January 2015. Its chief executive since December 2020, Jason Tebb, is a former estate agent who worked from junior negotiator to managing director. He has said the site began as an "insurance policy" against price rises from the biggest portals, and that he holds open meetings with agents that he calls the most important thing the company does.
In December 2023 the property data company CoStar Group, which is based in the USA, completed its takeover of OnTheMarket. Mr Tebb and other senior managers stayed on with the business. We could not confirm from the pages we read where in the UK its offices are, so we cannot say which towns or cities its teams work from. Before the takeover, OnTheMarket said it was about 60% owned by agencies, which shaped its character: it describes a collaborative relationship with agents and many product ideas came from agent feedback. After the deal, CoStar's leaders said they would invest to grow its share of the market, and Mr Tebb said the deal gave the company the resources to pursue its original aim of challenging the market leaders more directly. A portal this size needs a mix of people: software developers and data staff who keep the site running, product and design teams, marketing and communications specialists, customer-facing account managers who talk to estate agents, and finance and support staff. Mr Tebb's own route, from junior negotiator in an estate agency to chief executive, shows that experience from the property side is valued.
