A Dundee game studio that makes original games and co-builds games with major publishers and brands across mobile, PC, Roblox and console.
Outplay Entertainment is an independent game studio in Dundee, Scotland. It makes its own games and also works with big publishers and brand owners to build theirs. Its own titles include The Incentive Program, a match-3 roguelite on Steam set in a surreal corporate nightmare, the Creeps tower-defence series, Crafty Candy and Mystery Match. Partner games include Monopoly Match, made with VGW and Hasbro, Gordon Ramsay's Chef Blast, made with Studio Ramsay, Angry Birds POP!, made with Rovio, and Subway Surfers Blast, published by SYBO. It builds for mobile, PC, Roblox, web browsers and console.
The company's mission, in its own words, is to be an independent studio that makes original games and co-builds games with major publishers and IP holders. Its homepage says seriously fun games, on any platform. It lists four values: Evolve, meaning continuous learning and sharing skills; Clarity of Purpose, meaning understanding why work matters; Ambition, meaning determination and accountability; and Include and Recognise, meaning celebrating achievements and being inclusive.
Outplay was co-founded by brothers Douglas and Richard Hare, who are its co-CEOs, and its homepage gives Dundee, Scotland, as its base, established 2011 (another page on its site says 2010). Dundee has long been one of the UK's best known places for making games. The company says its games have been downloaded more than 250 million times, that it has been independent for fifteen years, and that its Roblox community has more than 735,000 members. It also says it has won TIGA awards, earned Apple Editors' Choice features and received a BAFTA nomination.
The company promotes flexible hybrid working, support for career development, and a culture that values fun and friendship. Its site names an operating team that includes heads of finance and HR and managers for engineering, art, quality assurance and design, plus an executive producer. That gives a good picture of the range of jobs inside a studio beyond making the game itself.
If you are interested in games in Scotland, Outplay is a good example of a Dundee studio that has grown by making mobile hits and then working with famous brands. Its own site has a careers page listing current vacancies. Note that after fifteen years it is better described as an established independent studio than a young start-up.
