A Camden-based British design brand that makes personalised stationery, planners, cards and journals, printed to order and often created with artists and illustrators.
Papier is a British stationery brand that sells online and through shops that stock it. It makes notebooks, diaries, planners, greeting cards, wedding invitations, wall art, wellness journals and photo books, and many of them can be personalised with a name, a message or a photo. Items are printed on demand, which means the company makes things once someone has ordered them rather than printing huge quantities in advance. The founder explained in a 2018 interview that this lets the team try new designs with little risk, and that Papier does not need to discount to clear unsold stock.
The company was founded in London in May 2015 by Taymoor Atighetchi, who had worked in management consultancy and, while at university, co-founded the student media site The Tab with two school friends. His idea, in his words, was to combine "a strong art and design aesthetic with business and technology" and to offer an online option for stationery that was "design led, offered great quality and was still affordable". More recently he described the ambition as to "redefine the stationery category by making it relevant to the modern consumer".
Papier is headquartered in Camden, London, according to its Wikipedia entry, and the company has printers in the UK, the United States and Australia and sells in all three. London is also where it advertises its design jobs: listings we found describe stationery designer, studio assistant and packaging designer roles, some of them hybrid. Its pop-up and events idea, the Papier Atelier, was planned for London in 2018 as a series of curated events and workshops. The company has said it works with about 40 design partners, artists and illustrators, and named partners include the Victoria and Albert Museum, Liberty, Mother of Pearl, House of Holland and Disney. Wikipedia gave 70 employees in 2021, an older figure.
On culture, the founder has said creativity, ambition and fun matter most to him, that he wants to keep the company agile and "enjoy what we do everyday", and that hiring strong people shapes the culture. The company works with illustrators, photographers and designers, which means a team of in-house designers sits next to people who run websites, customer emails, printing and deliveries. These are the founder's own words in interviews, not an independent review. Papier has won British Wedding Awards for best wedding stationery in 2018, 2019 and 2020, according to its Wikipedia entry.
A design-led online retailer employs many kinds of people: stationery and packaging designers who draw the products, buyers and product managers who decide what to make, marketing and social media staff, customer service teams, developers, and people who keep printing and delivery running. If you enjoy drawing, typography, writing or organising, there are roles that use those interests. The company site is the place to find out what is currently open.
