Paragraf

A Cambridgeshire company that makes electronic devices from graphene, including sensors for quantum computers, electric vehicles and medicine.

About Paragraf

Paragraf makes electronic components from graphene, a form of carbon only one atom thick that conducts electricity extremely well. Many companies have studied graphene, but Paragraf's approach is to grow it directly onto the standard wafers used in the chip industry, so it can fit into existing manufacturing lines. Its products include graphene Hall sensors, which measure magnetic fields from near absolute zero up to very strong fields, and graphene molecular sensors, which can be tuned to detect particular molecules. It also runs a graphene device foundry that offers 2D-material manufacturing to partners.

The company states its mission as enabling the mass production of graphene-based devices and speeding the use of 2D materials in electronics. Its chief executive and co-founder is Dr Simon Thomas, who was named TechWorks Entrepreneur of the Year in 2025. A listing for an event where he spoke said the company wants graphene to make electronics faster, more sensitive and more energy efficient, and to help create a better future for everyone. These are the company's own descriptions.

Paragraf is headquartered in Somersham, Cambridgeshire, and its graphene foundry is in nearby Huntingdon, where a third-party profile describes a cleanroom site. In 2023 it also bought a US business, Cardea Bio, adding molecular sensing know-how and US manufacturing, so the UK sits at the centre of a growing international operation. Customers named by third-party sources include quantum computing companies, car makers, universities and national laboratories, and Paragraf has worked with organisations such as CERN, the National Physical Laboratory and Rolls-Royce. Its GHS-A graphene Hall sensor won the Automotive Electronics Award at the Elektra Awards.

A third-party profile estimates between 51 and 200 employees, though that figure may be out of date. It names the leadership team as Simon Thomas (chief executive), Cathy Cranton (chief financial officer), Helen Dighton (HR director) and Andy MacInnes (chief development officer). The company says 2025 was its most newsworthy year, with new agreements with medical device companies and a GFET platform used in products being developed with them. A partnership with Tachmed on at-home diagnostic cartridges and a quantum research collaboration with Archer Materials have also been reported.

A materials-electronics company like this employs materials scientists, device physicists, process and cleanroom engineers, electronics and software engineers, quality and operations teams, and commercial, finance and HR staff. Because the same sensor can serve quantum computing, electric vehicles and diagnostics, people with chemistry, physics, engineering or biology backgrounds can all see a place in the work.
