A London-founded ad-tech company that helps publishers and advertisers use first-party data for advertising while protecting people's privacy.
Permutive is a technology company that sits between websites that publish content and the brands that want to advertise on them. Its software works out groups of readers who might be interested in an advert directly on their device, so that personal data does not need to leave the phone or browser. Publishers use it to understand their audiences and sell advertising. Advertisers use it to reach those audiences on trusted news and media sites.
In its own words, Permutive's mission is "to rebuild data in advertising to protect privacy and ensure the open web thrives". The open web means the wide range of publishers and websites outside the largest tech platforms. Its marketing stresses that privacy and performance should go together, and it describes its approach as privacy-first.
The company was founded in 2014 by Joe Root, now chief executive, and Tim Spratt, now chief technology officer. Both went through the Entrepreneur First start-up programme. Permutive is headquartered in London, and a careers-guide listing gives its office as 145 City Road. It also has teams in Europe and the Americas, with contact lines for New York and London. UK job listings include roles such as account manager in the UK, so the company clearly hires in Britain.
Permutive says over 150 publishers use its platform. Named clients include News Corp, Hearst, Sky, Conde Nast, the BBC, The Guardian, Business Insider and Axel Springer. Its products include a data management platform, a data clean room (a secure space where companies can combine data safely), curated audiences and AI-assisted tools for direct buying, which it calls Halo agents. It says its publisher customers use it to power audience advertising worth more than a billion dollars. Its founders are alumni of Entrepreneur First and Y Combinator, two well-known programmes for people starting companies.
A careers-guide profile describes the team as 101 to 200 people. It says the company puts weight on diversity, equity and inclusion, offers six months of paid parental leave, flexible paid leave and access to a wellbeing service. It also says that the company reduced its team in the past as part of an economic response. These points come from a third-party profile, so check them with the company. The jobs on offer span engineering, product, sales, account management and revenue operations. The same profile gives it a Glassdoor rating of 3.9 out of 5.
