The UK arm of QuEra Computing, a neutral-atom quantum computer company, which has a lab and office hub at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire.
QuEra Computing builds quantum computers that use neutral atoms. In this design, individual atoms are held in place by beams of laser light and used as qubits, the basic units of a quantum computer. The company is described as a global leader in neutral-atom quantum computing and has its main base in Boston in the United States. This page is about its UK arm, QuEra Computing UK, which sits at Harwell Campus in Oxfordshire, one of the best-known science sites in Britain.
The company's pages we could read did not give a formal mission statement. The Harwell announcement says the UK hub supports the company's growth, commercialisation and technology development across the UK and Europe, and that QuEra is working with the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC), which is also based at Harwell, to develop what it calls the world's most advanced neutral-atom quantum testbed. We have therefore not invented a mission for it. The company also works with other quantum firms, and it is listed as a hardware partner of the UK company Phasecraft.
The UK hub opened in June 2025. QuEra leased more than 3,500 square feet in Tech Foundry, a new building at Harwell with research, manufacturing and lab space that is clean and temperature controlled, large enough for a fully working quantum computer plus design, testing and office areas. Ed Durking, the company's chief financial officer, is also named as corporate director of QuEra Computing UK. He said the Harwell ecosystem of talent, suppliers and customers was 'immensely helpful'. No UK headcount was given.
The campus is home to the Quantum Cluster, which includes the NQCC and organisations from universities, government and industry, and to the Quantum Business Incubation Centre (QuBIC) for start-ups. The announcement quotes David Williams, commercial director of Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, calling the hub a milestone for the cluster. This gives some idea of the environment for staff, which is a busy research site rather than a city centre. We did not find QuEra's own statements about culture or values.
The jobs on a site like this include quantum engineers and physicists who build and test the machines, laser and optics specialists, software and controls engineers, technicians who help to install systems, and business, finance and operations staff. Physics, engineering and computing subjects are the usual routes. The company's website lists current roles.
