Rocksteady Studios

A London studio owned by Warner Bros. Games, creator of the Batman: Arkham series.

About Rocksteady Studios

Rocksteady Studios is a game developer in London and part of Warner Bros. Games. It is best known for the Batman: Arkham games, including Arkham Asylum (2009), Arkham City (2011), Arkham Knight (2015) and Arkham VR (2016). Its 2024 game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was less successful. It is listed as a co-developer of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, due in 2026.

We did not find a mission statement for Rocksteady in the pages we read. Its history shows a focus on story-led action games and on making licensed characters feel new to play, such as the studio's new approach to a film-licensed Batman game that went into full development in May 2007. Arkham Asylum launched to strong reviews and awards and showed that a licensed game could be both critically admired and popular with players. The studio has also made smaller games, including Urban Chaos: Riot Response in 2006, its first release.

Jamie Walker and Sefton Hill founded the studio on 13 December 2004, with many early staff coming from Argonaut Games, which had closed that year. SCi (later Eidos) backed the first game, Urban Chaos: Riot Response. Warner Bros. bought a majority stake in 2010 and now owns the studio. Walker and Hill left at the end of 2022; Nathan Burlow and Darius Sadeghian became co-studio heads. The studio had 214 employees at the end of 2024, after some team cuts that year. Before Batman, the studio's early work was backed by SCi, a UK games publisher that later became Eidos. In 2024 it also reduced its quality assurance team and made further cuts in programming and art, so ask about stability when you speak to staff.

The public pages we found say little about Rocksteady's day-to-day culture, so we do not make claims about it. If you speak to staff, it is reasonable to ask about team size, project planning and working hours. The studio's founders went on to start a new company called Hundred Star Games in January 2024, which shows how London's games community keeps creating new teams.

A studio like this employs game designers, programmers, artists, animators, audio specialists, producers and testers. Learning a game engine, practising character and level design, and building a small portfolio are good ways to prepare. Check the Warner Bros. Games careers pages for current roles.
