A UK mutual life, pensions and protection provider with graduate, apprenticeship and internship routes.
Royal London is a UK life insurance, pensions and investment company. In plain terms, it helps people put money aside for retirement and gives them financial protection, for example a payout if they become seriously ill or die and leave a family behind. Unlike most big insurers it is a mutual, which means it has no outside shareholders: it is owned by its customers, who are called members. Its own pages say that profits go back to customers, to financial strength and to social impact, and that colleagues are members too.
Royal London says it began in a London coffee house in 1861 as a friendly society, a club that people paid into so they could avoid a pauper's funeral. Its history page names Joseph Degge and Henry Ridge as the two men who met on City Road in February 1861 to form it (the page notes this location is by tradition). It was registered as The Royal London Friendly Society in April 1861 and became a mutual in 1908. Over the years it joined with other firms, including Scottish Life, Scottish Provident, Scottish Mutual, Royal Liver and the life and pensions business of the Co-operative Group (Wikipedia). Its registered office is at 80 Fenchurch Street in the City of London, and it says it has over 5,000 employees (as at 30 June 2026).
Its stated purpose is "Protecting today, investing in tomorrow. Together we are mutually responsible." It also calls itself a "purpose-driven, modern mutual" and describes its people as "champions of the mutual mindset", focused on long-term customer outcomes. Its mascot is Gilbert the pelican, which it uses as a symbol of generosity and provision. These are the company's own words.
The business covers pensions and protection products for individuals, employers and trustees, sold mainly through financial advisers; Royal London Asset Management, which looks after investments for customers and large institutions and is based only in London; and Royal London Ireland, which sells pension and protection products through brokers. Its jobs site says people work across different teams, from marketing, finance and risk to actuarial, change, technology and data.
Royal London describes a "unique culture where we're all moving in the right direction together" and says it wants people who are "innovative, curious and enthusiastic" (company claims). For young people it offers summer internships (about ten weeks from mid-June) and year-in-industry placements (twelve months) for students in their penultimate or final year, from any degree subject. Roles are advertised from early October to mid-November, followed by a short cover letter and an in-person assessment day of about three hours, usually in late January or early February. It also advertises apprenticeships, including a degree apprenticeship in data, and entry-level roles, with job listings placing early-career roles in Edinburgh. Interns can move on to a graduate programme or entry-level job. We did not find pay or entry grades.
