RSHP (Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners)

A London architecture practice, formerly Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, behind the Lloyd's building, the Leadenhall Building and the Senedd in Cardiff, owned by a charitable trust.

About RSHP (Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners)

RSHP is the architecture practice that began as the Richard Rogers Partnership in 1977, soon after the Pompidou Centre in Paris opened. It later became Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (2007) and, after Richard Rogers retired and died, rebranded as RSHP in June 2022. Its London buildings include the Lloyd's building, the Millennium Dome (now The O2), Heathrow Terminal 5, One Hyde Park, the Leadenhall Building (known as the Cheesegrater), NEO Bankside and 88 Wood Street. It also designed the Senedd, the Welsh parliament building, in Cardiff, as well as a Maggie's Centre in London.

The practice's values are bound up with how it is owned. Wikipedia says it is owned by a charitable trust, so no individual holds a share in its value. Profits are divided among all staff and their chosen charities according to publicly declared principles, and directors' salaries are capped relative to the lowest paid. The ethos it reports is a strong focus on sustainability, urban regeneration and social awareness, and a belief in public space. Richard Rogers said the name change was intended to stop the practice being named after someone no longer alive, since architecture is "a living thing".

The head office is on Level 14 of 122 Leadenhall Street in the City of London, in the Leadenhall Building that the practice designed, completed in 2014. Before that it worked from Thames Wharf Studios. It also has offices in Shanghai, Sydney and Paris, according to Wikipedia. The pages we could read do not state how many people work there, and we found no list of other UK offices.

On people, the practice has grown through partners who rose through the firm. Graham Stirk joined in 1983 and Ivan Harbour in 1985, and Wikipedia says there were 10 partners as of October 2023. Tracy Meller became the first female partner in 2015. Several well-known architects, including Eva Jiricna and Jan Kaplicky, worked there earlier in their careers. It has won the Stirling Prize twice, in 2006 for Terminal 4 at Madrid-Barajas Airport and in 2009 for the Maggie's Centre in London.

A practice like this needs architects and architectural assistants, technologists, interior and landscape designers, model makers, visualisation specialists, project managers and operations and finance staff. Subjects such as art, design technology, maths, physics and geography are all useful starting points. For openings, use the practice's own website, which we did not read.
