S4C

The Welsh-language television channel, commissioning programmes from independent producers and BBC Cymru Wales, with its HQ in Carmarthen.

About S4C

S4C is a Welsh-language television service that launched on 1 November 1982 as the first channel aimed specifically at Welsh speakers. Its remit is to provide a service featuring a wide range of programmes in the Welsh language. It offers children's content under Cyw for nursery-age children and Stwnsh for older children, and shows drama such as Pobol y Cwm, produced by BBC Cymru Wales.

The remit wording above is the closest we found to a mission statement, and S4C is clearly about keeping Welsh language and culture alive on screen. It is funded by a mix of DCMS grant, a contribution from the BBC licence fee and a small amount of advertising, about 2% of income from commercial sources. Funding has been shifting towards the BBC licence fee since 2013, and in 2022 DCMS stopped funding S4C directly and froze the licence fee contribution until 2024. Its Welsh Government and UK Government oversight is set out in its annual reports.

S4C's headquarters is at Canolfan S4C Yr Egin in Carmarthen, with regional offices in Caernarfon and Cardiff. Having its main base in west Wales, not in Cardiff or London, makes it a notable employer for creative and media careers in communities where such jobs are rare. The chief executive is Geraint Evans, who has held the post since 2024. Pobol y Cwm is a long-running soap opera, and the commissioning model means that Welsh-language television, children's content and drama are made by a network of producers rather than inside one building.

S4C does not make its own programmes. It commissions them from BBC Cymru Wales and independent production companies, so many media jobs connected with S4C are at those producers across Wales. S4C's annual reports for 2022 to 23 and 2024 to 25 are published on the UK government website, which gives students a way to read about the channel's work in detail. As of 2024 S4C had an average of 118 employees, a small team doing commissioning, scheduling, digital, marketing, finance and communications work.

Welsh language skills are likely to matter for many roles, but we did not research this and did not verify it, so check S4C's own site. We have not researched careers pages; S4C's annual report and website are the best places for the latest facts.
