Sainsbury's

One of Britain's biggest supermarket groups, running supermarkets, convenience stores and Argos, and home to the Nectar loyalty scheme.

About Sainsbury's

Sainsbury's is a British food retailer. It runs large supermarkets and smaller convenience stores, sells groceries online, and owns Argos, Habitat and the Tu clothing brand. It also runs Nectar, a loyalty scheme with about 24 million active members, and Nectar360, a loyalty, insights and retail media business launched in 2019. Its Smart Charge service, launched at the start of 2024, offers ultra-rapid electric vehicle charging at around 80 Sainsbury's locations.

The company was founded by John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury, who opened the first store in London in 1869. Its corporate site says their aim was to provide good quality food at affordable prices, and describes itself as proud to be at the heart of Britain's relationship with food for over 150 years. Its stated purpose is "Making good food joyful, accessible and affordable for everyone, every day." Chief executive Simon Roberts says the company is at its best when it is at the heart of Britain's relationship with food.

Sainsbury's is a UK business with stores nationwide. Its corporate site says it has over 600 supermarkets, 885 convenience stores and more than 1,100 Argos collection points, and that about 70 percent of the country shopped with it in the past year. Argos, which began in 1973 and joined Sainsbury's in 2016, has standalone stores and shops inside Sainsbury's supermarkets, and says fast-track delivery covers more than 90 percent of UK postcodes. Habitat, founded in 1964, is sold in about 600 Sainsbury's stores, and Tu clothing in over 400. The pages we read did not state a head office address.

The company says it employs around 140,000 colleagues. In its own words it is committed to being an inclusive employer where everyone is treated fairly and with respect, says it has led the way on pay in its sector for many years, and says it offers first jobs, fresh starts and long-term careers. It also says it was named Grocer of the Year in 2024. These are the company's own claims.

The roles the business needs are wide. Its pages name store work in supermarkets and convenience stores, online shopping, Argos collection points, a Habitat in-house design studio with about 20 designers and product developers, sourcing from farmers and producers in the UK and overseas, and retail media through Nectar360. A business of this size also needs people in buying, technology, finance and logistics, though the pages we read did not list those, so check the Sainsbury's jobs site for current roles.
