About Schroders

Schroders is an investment manager. People and organisations such as pension funds hand it money, and its teams decide where to invest it, in things like company shares, bonds, property and private companies, to try to grow it over time. It also runs wealth management for private clients. It employs over 5,700 people across 37 locations (from a graduate listing).

Schroders was founded in London in 1804 by Johann Heinrich Schröder, who formed a partnership with his elder brother (its history page does not name him). The Schroder family kept a significant shareholding after the company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1959, which the company credits for its long-term thinking and stable ownership. Milestones on its history page include its first investment trust in 1924, its first UK pension fund in 1947, a sale of its investment banking arm in 2000 to focus on asset and wealth management, and its first responsible investment policy in 2001. In the UK it is based in the City of London.

Its purpose, in its own words, is "creating prosperity together", meaning with clients, people and society, for generations to come. Its early careers page says "we aim to be the place where people choose to build rewarding careers", and it calls inclusion and diversity "a strategic priority". These are the company's own claims.

Schroders manages money across public markets and private assets, runs wealth management for individuals and families, and has been adding private markets businesses since 2016, including a majority stake in impact investor BlueOrchard (2019) and a 2024 partnership with Phoenix Group to launch Future Growth Capital. Behind the scenes are teams in product, client sales, technology, business transformation, compliance, marketing and finance, plus graduate programmes in areas such as finance, tax, internal audit and wealth management (Brightnetwork).

Schroders lists several routes for young people. There is a spring insight programme for first-year university students (applications open in January), a ten-week summer internship and placements for students in their penultimate year, a graduate programme, and apprenticeships for school leavers that combine paid work with learning. Interns work in teams such as Investment, Wealth Management, Product, Client Group, Global Technology and Finance, set goals in their first week, join Coffee Hours with senior leaders, and complete a team project; perks mentioned include an on-site gym and office terraces (company descriptions). A finance graduate listing for a 2025 start asked for a final-year student or graduate with an honours degree, with no preferred subject or predicted grade, and the right to work in the UK. Schroders supports professional qualifications such as CIMA or ACCA. That listing closed in September 2024, so check current dates. We did not find pay.
