Seasalt Cornwall

A Cornwall-based clothing brand, rooted in a 1981 workwear shop in Penzance, that designs women's clothing inspired by the Cornish coast and is a Certified B Corp.

About Seasalt Cornwall

Seasalt Cornwall designs and sells clothing and accessories for women, including dresses, knitwear, trousers, tops, nightwear, bags, socks and jewellery. It is also known for waterproof raincoats, which the brand links to its "45 years of wild Atlantic weather". Its collections include ranges in organic cotton, linen and cord. The brand sells through its own shops, its website and other retailers, and it describes its overall approach as "Life Worn Well".

The story began in 1981, when Don Chadwick opened a shop called General Clothing Stores on Adelaide Street in Penzance, selling workwear to local farmers, fishermen and artists. His sons Neil, Leigh and David later started the Seasalt clothing brand. In its own words, the company's purpose is to "inspire women of all ages and shapes to dress with creativity and confidence", and its stated value is "We act responsibly, for the wellbeing of our people and the planet". In July 2024 it was certified as a B Corp, with a score of 100.2 against a pass mark of 80, and it aims to reach Carbon Net Zero by 2040.

Cornwall is central to the company. Its registered office is in Falmouth, and it has shops in Cornish towns including Falmouth, Truro, Penzance, St Ives, Padstow, Looe and Fowey, as well as shops elsewhere in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand. It says it is "one of Cornwall's largest employers". The company's own pages give two different shop counts, 82 in one place and 75 UK shops in another, so we have not quoted a single figure. We did not find a current headcount.

The company says its team includes fashion and textile designers, fine artists and illustrators, and that "it's their sketchbooks and skill that bring our imaginative ideas to life". It describes Cornwall's "wild landscape, artistic culture and maritime heritage" as inspiration for everything it does, and it has a community fund held with the Cornwall Community Foundation, which showed up in our search results although we did not read it. These are the company's own claims.

People at a clothing company like this work in print and pattern design, product development and fabric sourcing, buying and merchandising, marketing and photography, customer service, and shops across the country. Since the head office is in Cornwall, it offers fashion careers outside London, which may suit students who want to stay in the South West. Check its website for the current list of roles and locations.
