Shiptheory

A Bristol-based software company, launched in 2015, whose shipping automation platform links online shops and warehouse systems to more than 100 couriers.

About Shiptheory

Shiptheory makes software that takes the repeated work out of sending parcels. When an online shop gets an order, Shiptheory can choose a courier using rules the shop sets, create the shipping label and customs paperwork, print them and send tracking details back to the customer. Its own pages say it connects to more than 70 ERP, e-commerce and warehouse systems, including Shopify, NetSuite and Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and to more than 100 domestic, international and pallet couriers such as Royal Mail, FedEx, DPD, UPS and APC. It also handles returns and offers carbon offsetting for shipments.

The team says it has worked on shipping software since 2007. Co-founder James Mikkelson entered UK e-commerce in 2006, began writing integration software in 2008 because UK courier systems were hard to connect to, and co-founded Shiptheory in 2015. A partner profile names James and Mark Mikkelson as founders. Shiptheory was in development from late 2014, took its first customers in January 2015 and officially launched in September 2015. Its stated aim is to make automated shipping available to businesses of all sizes at a fair price. In the founders' words in a 2021 interview, the goal is to 'automate repetitive tasks, remove friction, and overcome technical barriers'.

Shiptheory is based in Bristol, at All Saints Street in the city centre. A partner profile from the courier company whistl also mentions a newer office in Miami, Florida, as the company expands into the United States. We found no other UK offices. Its customers are online retailers, and named examples include Jimmy's Iced Coffee, Barry M, Scrub Daddy and PetShop.co.uk.

On culture, the company describes itself as a small, down-to-earth team. In the 2021 interview it says the team is 'open and honest with each other and also with the users', that staff are encouraged to grow individually and as a group, and that it tries to balance work with what matters most in life. Customer service is a point of pride: it offers help by live chat, phone and email, and calls its support team award-winning. These are the company's own claims, not independent reviews.

A company like this employs software developers who build and maintain the courier and shop connections, technical support specialists who help customers fix problems, onboarding and account specialists, and sales and marketing staff. The work suits people who like problem solving and who enjoy explaining technical ideas in plain words. Because it is a small business, people often cover more than one area. Shiptheory's own website is the place to check for roles.
