specialist insulation, interiors and roofing distributor · Built Environment & Construction

SIG

A specialist UK distributor of insulation, interiors and roofing products, with over 130 branches nationwide and a head office in Sheffield.

About SIG

SIG supplies specialist building products to contractors and builders rather than general materials. Its recruitment site describes three groups of businesses: SIG Insulation and Dry Lining, which supplies insulation, interiors, construction accessories and heating and ventilation products; SIG Roofing, which calls itself the UK's largest specialist roofing merchant and says it has been operating for over 40 years; and Performance Technology Group, which combines several brands focused on fire, thermal and acoustic uses. It says it has more than 130 branches across the UK.

The company began in Sheffield in 1956 as Sheffield Insulations Limited, founded by Ernest Adsetts, whose family had a background in ice cream and sweet shops. His son, Norman Adsetts, saw the potential of fibreglass insulation while working for Fibreglass Ltd, a Pilkington subsidiary, and urged his father to start a wholesale distributor. Norman joined in 1966, became managing director in 1970 and chairman in 1985. The company was listed in the late 1980s as Sheffield Insulations Group and became SIG plc in 1995. It describes itself today as a "people-first, purpose-driven business" that helps customers build safer and more sustainable spaces.

SIG's UK network covers the country, with more than 130 branches, according to its recruitment page. An older company profile from around 2005 listed the head office as Hillsborough Works, Langsett Road, Sheffield, and said SIG then operated across the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Benelux and Poland. That is dated, and the group has changed since, so check where the head office is now. In that earlier profile the company's approach was superior service, a wide product range and expert advice.

On culture, SIG emphasises quality, reliability, expertise and service, and frames its teams around a shared goal of making a real difference on site. The company describes benefits including training academies, share schemes, holiday allowances of 25 days plus bank holidays and a pension. Those are the company's own claims. We did not find independent evidence on working life, so we cannot say how they feel in practice.

In a specialist distributor, branch staff need real product knowledge, because roofers and insulation fitters ask detailed technical questions about performance, fire safety and sustainability. Other roles include sales advisers, drivers and warehouse teams, branch managers, and purchasing, finance, marketing and human resources teams at head office. If you like technical products, the science of keeping buildings warm and dry, or helping people choose the right solution for a job, this kind of specialist role may suit you.
