Smythson

A Bond Street luxury stationery and leather goods house, founded by Frank Smythson in 1887, famous for diaries, notebooks and the Nile Blue box.

About Smythson

Smythson is a British luxury brand that began as a stationer and now makes diaries, notebooks, leather bags, wallets, travel accessories, writing paper, invitations and gifts. It describes itself as offering British luxury leather goods and a commitment to craftsmanship. Each product comes in a signature Nile Blue box, hand-wrapped with navy ribbon, and it offers personalised stamping and bespoke services.

Frank Smythson opened his first shop on New Bond Street in London in 1887, selling "stationery and fancy articles of a high-class character". In the 1890s Smythson made stationery for each of Queen Victoria's residences, and in 1908 it created what it calls the first portable diary, nicknamed "the Panama hat of books". The brand states its mission as making the ordinary extraordinary: making everyday items feel special and last. In 2002 it made a bespoke invitation and gift for each passenger on the last commercial Concorde flight. Customers have included Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly and Katharine Hepburn, and in the 1970s it made bespoke diaries for Sir Ranulph Fiennes's transglobe expedition.

Smythson's home is Bond Street, London, where it started in 1887, and it has a bespoke stationery salon in London. It has held a royal warrant since 1964, with new warrants from King Charles III and Queen Camilla in 2024, one of only seven companies to receive them that year. It also opened a Madison Avenue flagship in New York in 2026. The brand ships to the UK in pounds. We could not find a full list of UK shops on the page we read.

On culture, the company's own writing focuses on craftsmanship, creativity and collaboration. Recent collaborations include Aston Martin Aramco F1 Team, Burberry, Grace Coddington, the artist Thomas Lélu, Peter Rabbit, Liberty prints and sacai. In 2026 a 30th anniversary edition of its iconic fashion diary featured artwork by Grace Coddington. These collaborations suggest a company that works with artists, designers and other brands, but we found nothing about its staff numbers or working environment.

The jobs at a house like this include designers and product developers, leather craftspeople and stationery finishers, personalisation and bespoke specialists, shop teams on Bond Street and in other locations, e-commerce and marketing staff, and people in buying, planning, finance and customer service. If you enjoy paper, pens, diaries and well-made things, this is a company built around them. The company's website lists current roles.
