PlayStation's UK studios, including Media Molecule in Guildford and Firesprite and XDev in Liverpool, within Sony Interactive Entertainment.
PlayStation is a global entertainment company that makes the PlayStation family of products and services, including PlayStation 5, PlayStation VR and PlayStation Plus. It is part of Sony Interactive Entertainment. In the UK it runs game studios as part of PlayStation Studios.
We did not find a formal mission statement. PlayStation's careers pages talk about a passion for innovation, technology and play, and say it strives to create an inclusive environment that empowers employees and embraces diversity. It also has a Fair Chance policy for applicants with arrest and conviction records. These are the company's own words.
The best-known UK studio is Media Molecule in Guildford, Surrey. It was founded in 2006 by former Lionhead staff Alex Evans, Kareem Ettouney, Mark Healey and David Smith, and Sony bought it in 2010. It made LittleBigPlanet, Tearaway and the BAFTA-winning Dreams. It opened a small Brighton satellite in 2016, and a current job advert describes its refurbished studio in central Guildford. In Liverpool, Firesprite (founded 2012, joined PlayStation 2021) made Horizon Call of the Mountain, and XDev (founded 2000) works with outside developers across Europe on games such as Until Dawn and Detroit: Become Human. London is also listed as one of PlayStation Studios' three headquarters locations, and PlayStation roles have been advertised in London.
Media Molecule has favoured small teams. Founder Mark Healey was quoted as saying "Everyone at Media Molecule matters". Job listings show the creative range of jobs: designers, environment artists, programmers and community leads, working closely together on a new project.
Some past UK studios have closed, including London Studio in 2024, so the set of UK sites changes over time. Check PlayStation's careers site for current openings. In a 2015 interview, Media Molecule's studio director Siobhan Reddy said the team loves "coming up with new ideas" and avoids repeating itself, using game jams to test many ideas and then cutting features until only the ones that deliver the most fun remain. She also credited community managers for keeping a friendly, open conversation with players, which matters because LittleBigPlanet and Dreams rely on player-made creations. That interview is dated, so check what the studio says now.
