London-based generative AI company, best known for Stable Diffusion, which makes AI image, video, audio and 3D models available for creators and developers.
Stability AI is a London-based company that builds generative AI models for images, video, audio and 3D. It is best known for Stable Diffusion, an AI model that can create pictures from a written description, released in August 2022 with its code and weights made openly available. The company says it has been downloaded more than 350 million times, and today it offers models both to creative professionals and to developers and businesses.
Stability AI was founded in 2019 by Emad Mostaque and Cyrus Hodes. The company has changed a lot over its short life. Mostaque stepped down as chief executive in March 2024, and Prem Akkaraju, formerly the chief executive of the visual effects company Weta Digital, took over in June 2024. The film director James Cameron joined its board later that year. Stability AI is headquartered in London.
On its website, Stability AI describes its goal as unlocking the power of open-source generative AI to expand human creativity, and says it wants its models to be accessible, adaptable and designed to empower creators, developers and enterprises. It says it builds for creatives first, and positions itself as a maker of purpose-built AI products for professional creatives in music, gaming and entertainment.
Its range includes Stable Diffusion 3.5 for images, Stable Video Diffusion, Stable Audio for music and sound, a family of 3D models, and language models such as Stable LM. Developers can use the models through a hosted API or run them on their own systems with a self-hosted licence. Stable Audio is also available as an app.
Stability AI has been the subject of legal disputes about how AI image models are trained, including a case brought by Getty Images in the UK, which Wikipedia reports the English High Court decided in Stability AI's favour in November 2025. The company's careers page says millions of people create with its technology and invites applicants to help build what comes next. It does not list open roles, offices or early-careers programmes in the pages we read, so students should check the careers page directly.
