The UK arm of a global design and engineering consultancy, with about 2,500 UK staff at 42 offices, working on water, transport, energy, buildings and communities.
Stantec is a design and engineering consultancy that works in the UK on water, transport, energy, buildings, environmental and community development projects. A Building magazine employer profile described it as offering engineering, architecture and environmental services, and said it had operated for 70 years. Its Leeds office announcement said it combines creative and technical approaches to deliver sustainable, resilient and connected places for public and private clients, and named Yorkshire Water as a client. The UK projects named in the Building profile include the Berwick Bank wind farm in Northumberland and the masterplan for Abbey Wood and South Thamesmead in London.
Stantec's UK business was built mainly through joining with existing firms. It acquired the engineering consultancy Peter Brett Associates, then Barton Willmore, a planning and design firm, and in 2024 it announced the purchase of Hydrock, an integrated engineering design firm with about 950 people in 22 offices, covering fire safety, energy and sustainability, civil and structural, building services, transport, environmental and geotechnical work. Stantec said that deal would grow its UK workforce by more than 30 percent, and that the Hydrock name would be dropped; Hydrock's founder, Brian McConnell, was stepping down. It was Stantec's fifth UK purchase since 2016. We found no mission statement on the pages we read, so we have not invented one.
The Building employer profile says Stantec had about 2,544 UK staff and 42 UK offices; that figure is dated and was before the Hydrock deal, so the current number will be higher. Offices include Leeds, where about 140 colleagues moved to 2 Whitehall Quay near the railway station, and its job postings point to Glasgow, Bristol and London, among other places. Stantec says its Yorkshire water work is growing. Stantec's worldwide workforce was over 30,000 at the time of the Hydrock announcement.
On culture, the profile reports that staff get wellbeing support in physical, psychological and social areas, hybrid working, up to 25 days' holiday, private healthcare, career breaks and enhanced parental leave, and an average of 25 training hours a year. Women made up 35% of UK staff in that profile. The company's Leeds office has showers and a changing area and is easy to reach by bike, foot and public transport. These benefits and figures are the company's reported claims, taken from third-party and company news, and are dated.
Roles include civil, structural and water engineers, hydraulic modellers, transport planners, environmental scientists, fire engineers, building services engineers, planners, designers, project managers and business support staff. Students interested in sciences, maths, geography, design or computing can find a place, whether through engineering degrees or other routes into consultancy.
